We can all agree that the HVAC system is the heart of the home and keeping it running smoothly is a big job. At Heating & Cooling Two, our dedicated team of expertly trained technicians provides professional service and quality workmanship 24/7 to ensure our customers are comfortable and happy all year round. But have you ever wondered what it’s like to work for a heating and cooling company? In this month’s blog, we spoke one-on-one with seasoned professional Vince Woodruff to discuss a day in the life of an HVAC service technician.
Skills, Education, and Training
Vince started with Heating & Cooling Two 16 years ago, 10 of which were spent doing installations. He returned to school and earned his Associates Degree but most of the technical training he received was from different manufacturers in the heating & cooling industry. Problem solving and troubleshooting are two important skills an HVAC service technician needs to have to be successful in the job. For those looking to get into the industry, Vince says you must have an exceptional understanding of electrical, mechanical and refrigeration systems, as well as good customer service skills when dealing with homeowners.
No Two Days are Alike
According to Vince, a 20-year veteran of the heating and cooling industry, one of the best parts of his job is the variety. Every day, he faces new challenges, which definitely keeps the job interesting. “We start work at seven am,” says Woodruff, “first dropping off paperwork at the office and picking up material for the day. We have a daily schedule of jobs, but things can get added so no two days are alike.”
A typical work week is roughly 45-50 hours, sometimes longer. Depending on the work, Vince handles an average of six calls per day. “You have to be able to manage your time well on each job. That’s a big requirement.” The ability to work after hours and on weekends is another requirement as HVAC service technicians are on call for emergencies, especially with Minnesota’s extreme temperatures. But even during the slower periods, the technicians stay busy with routine maintenance calls, new installations, and other services like geo-thermal heating systems.
Why Heating & Cooling Two?
When asked why he initially joined and continues to work for Heating & Cooling Two, Vince didn’t hesitate to answer. “The company is family-owned and has been in business since 1980. Management still works in the field, so they know what it takes, they know what they’re looking at.”
As Vince explained, in an industry as competitive as HVAC, being honest and making the proper recommendations rather than unnecessary upselling is the way to gain a customer’s trust. That’s why customers keep coming back.
There’s no indication that Vince or the rest of Heating & Cooling Two’s service technicians will be slowing down anytime soon. “Things are always changing, which keeps it entertaining. As older technicians retire, the need for skilled people is not going away, so it’s a good industry to get into.”
